Prof. Maurizio Marabelli

Maurizio Marabelli, born in Rome in 1934, graduated in Chemistry at the University of Rome, has worked at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità , Rome, from 1962 to 1964 and then at the Istituto Centrale del Restauro , Rome, from 1964 to 2001, when he retired, teaching also Chemistry for restoration from 1967 to 2001 and being Head of the laboratory of Chemistry from 1980 to 2001.
He has collaborated in many international projects, also as expert for Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as ICCROM and UNESCO consultant, in India, Republic of China, Japan, Malta, Iran, France, Holland, Germany. He teached also from 1978 to 1988 in the international courses of ICCROM SPC, MPC and ARC.
In Italy he has collaborated with CNR ( as ICR coordinator in two European projects of European Community; as CNR consultant for the “Piano Finalizzato per i Beni culturali”; as head of a CNR project ). He has carried out and coordinated many researches in the field of conservation of mural paintings, bronze monuments – archaeological metal findings, and environmental pollution evaluation as: St. Mark Horses in Venice , Dancing Satyr of Mazzara del Vallo, Riace Bronzes of Reggio Calabria, Marcus Aurelius Monument in Rome, Perseo monument in Florence; mural paintings of Scrovegni Chapel in Padua and of Wedding Room in Gonzaga Castle in Mantua, Last Supper in St. Maria delle Grazie in Milan, St. Ciriaco Cathedral in Ancona etc….; also expert for atmospheric pollution evaluation and monitoring for monuments, historical centres and museums, coeditor of the document “ Carta del Rischio” and of the “ Atto di indirizzo sui criteri tecnico-scientifici e sugli standard di funzionamento e sviluppo dei musei”.
He has been ICR coordinator and -after retirement- consultant for eight International Conferences on Non-Destructive Investigations, organized by ICR and AIPnD, and coeditor of the Proceedings of the same Conferences.
He is author-coauthor of about 200 reports, 150 papers and five books. He teaches , as contract professor, Chemistry for Restoration at the University of Tuscia-Cultural Heritage Conservation Faculty, Viterbo ( from 1990 to 2006), Easel Paintings and Metals Conservation at the University La Sapienza-MFN Sciences Faculty, Rome ( from 2001 ), and Chemistry for Restoration at the University La Sapienza- Humanistic Sciences Faculty, Rome ( from 2000 to 2005 ).
